There are times when I am challenged by my dear husband to use new ingredients and come up with a meal that meets his seal of approval 🙂 . I sent him shopping one day and he came back with an extra item to the list – Curly Kale. As soon as I saw it I thought Oh NO ! I have tried to cook with curly kale before some years back but found it too irony in taste and it did not quite work with what I made. So this time I thought I will look for some inspiration and then try and create a dish. I did a search and looked at a blogger and from there to a site dedicated to curly kale, which had lots of recipe ideas and nutritionist information. Both the sites seem to talk about the curly kale with a lot of fondness and suggested to use it as a cabbage. So I thought, right, looked at the ingredients I had then added the ingredients to this dish until it was an aesthetically pleasing. Then I served it up and it tasted great, even my son enjoyed it – I removed the green pepper corns from his dish. I thought that something so good for us and tasty, can’t go wrong really. So I will not be avoiding this vegetable in the future. I got some more curly kale soon after and used it in a curry as well as in a pasta sauce, which also tasted good.
I had a version of this soup at a friends house, when I was pregnant, it was so tasty and different to what I normally make, i.e. plain tomato or with pasta & vegetables (carrot, sweet potato, butternut squash etc.) In the past I have tried cauliflower soup and found it to be very bland, however the way that this has other vegetables and multi grains gives it a good depth of textures and added flavours. So you guessed it, as always I recreated it at home. My friend used the shop bought multi grain mix, however I made my own mix at home from the individual grains. You can put what ever vegetables you have – it does not have to be what I have used.

A sizzler is made on either clay or iron plates, they are heated and various different cooked foods are placed on it and when it starts to sizzle it is ready to be served. It is a good winter dish to have, as it remains hot for a long time. I have had many vegetarian sizzler’s and they have all been interesting, however I guess I am biased with this version as I grew up with it. Another reason why the taste is so good is because of using clay plates as opposed to iron plates, the flavours are absorbed more and it dries up the gravy more so that enhances the flavour. If you break it down and look at it, it is just rice, beans, curries and chips, however the combination works well for our family. It has become a Christmas meal favourite for some years now, like a tradition. Each of the individual curries used in this recipe can be eaten as part of a meal also i.e. with chapatti (rotli) and rice. So in effect in this one recipe I am giving you four different curry recipes 🙂
Like all other exotic fruits I love pineapples and have always had it raw. When you cook it, the taste and texture changes completely. This recipe brings out the flavour despite the use of spices. Do not be put of by the list of ingredients, just break it down and it is a simple step by step recipe. I normally make a batch of the lemongrass paste and freeze it, so as I can use it when ever I want to flavour anything. Doing this make its much easier to tackle this recipe as all the other ingredients are part of my spice rack. Aromatic and full of flavour, this recipe is worth a try.
